In previous Retail Tech Talks episodes, we’ve covered why tech bloat is a major problem for eCommerce teams. But how does it happen in the first place? What are some signs that your stack might need an overhaul? In episode five, Carlos Famadas covers three key signals to look out for that could ultimately cause your tech stack to become bloated and inefficient.
0:01 – There’s always new technologies coming on, and different departments want to try out different pieces of software. So eventually, you can have a lot of technical bloat.
0:11 – A lot of times what we’re finding is, there’s duplicate software. Something else also has that feature. We don’t need two vendors. We can do it with one.
0:17 – Secondly, there’s, some software we find that, we don’t have as many users on anymore. So we can certainly cut down on some expenses. The usage is wrong and we can reset the contract.
0:27 – And lastly, always looking at whether or not it actually provided a return. Are we making, you know, return on the investment? Is it improving our top line or bottom line? Is it making people efficient or not? And what we find is when we do we do an audit on some of the pieces of software, we find that we can maybe live without it.
0:40 – We always like to look at it from different perspectives. It’s not just what it costs, but what are we getting for it, and is it helping making us more productive.
