eCommerce leaders face a “tug of war” when it comes to web performance. On one hand, they are facing competitive pressure to stay innovative, build new features, and provide rich and engaging online shopper experiences.

To do so, they must deploy 3rd party technologies, which have been proven to significantly slow page load times. On the other hand, they are also being told to speed up their websites or shoppers will leave in droves resulting in lost revenue.

This report examines the current state of eCommerce web performance with direct feedback from 125 eCommerce Leaders.

E-commerce is beyond big.  It’s not just another trend.  In fact, it’s reinventing how humans interact by changing the way we exchange goods and services.  Anyone who works in e-commerce works on the cutting edge, whether they feel like it or not.

Yottaa is exhibiting at Internet Retailer Conference and Expo – IRCE 2012, the largest event on the e-commerce calendar.  It’s truly huge: over 8,000 e-commerce site owners and exhibitors will be descending on Chicago’s McCormack Center  June 5-8, and many more will be in attendance.

We’re so excited to meet, chat with, and be amazed by the innovations and success stories of others in the e-commerce industry.  At Yottaa, e-commerce websites have always been a main focus: we have thousands of e-commerce users and solutions like the Yottaa’s Magento Solution. E-commerce sites are perhaps the most vulnerable to performance and reliability issues, since for them losing website visitors literally means losing customers.

For a little taste of what’s to come we’ve constructed a benchmark with a handful of companies who will be at the conference, chosen at random.  Anyone can set up benchmarks with a free Yottaa account, which scores websites 1 to 100 with Yottaa Score, our measure of website performance that factors in website load times from real browsers located around the world.

IRCE Benchmark – Results

We won’t name names (unless it’s good news), but in general what we see is some great performance, some poor performance, and a lot of opportunity across the board.

The mean for the ten random sites is 47 and the median 52.  The highest-ranking site on the list is www.countrywillow.com with a very respectable 88 Yottaa Score.   On the other end of the spectrum, one unfortunate site is far below the others, with a Yottaa score of only 10, and a global average load time of nearly 25 seconds.  None of the sites has a Yottaa Score over 90, a mark of exceptional web performance. (www.google.com has a score of 98-100.)
